Boss Hawg
Boss Hawg's home pen is the mountain town of Boone N.C. The Hawg formed in 2003 at a party on the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mtns. The band quickly discovered that combining their contemporary rendition of traditional Appalachian Mountain music with fun loving audiences produced a natural high-energy vibe that is reminiscent of the once-a-month barn dances from the turn of the century. Their shows usually comprise of newgrass instrumentals; super-country-funk songwriting; and straight-ahead bluegrass, country, or folk that keeps one foot planted in the cornfield of tradition. Since the band formed eight years ago, Boss Hawg has been the undisputed entertainers for private functions in northwestern North Carolina. The songs coming from the band are now garnering national recognition, so it’s now time to watch them break out.
Jon Davis, the guitarist; Kim France, the bassist; and Mark Schimick, the multi-instrumentalist, are the core of Boss Hawg. Together for eight years, they have written some of the best material of their lives and created a distinct and personal vocal harmony that the band is known by. Jon has a combustible energy and dynamic on-stage personality ensures that once you have seen him perform, you won't forget him. He has the ability to not only write amazing songs but to channel them--often on-stage in front of a live audience. Kim France plays the stand-up bass, and met Mark and Jon in the Outer Banks twelve years ago. Her no-nonsense lyrics and uncanny ability to sing in perfect harmony with anybody is what makes her a secret weapon in the band. It is not uncommon to meet people who drive long distances "just to see that girl play that bass!" Kim's infectious energy and belting vocals have also become an integral part of every show. With the reintroduction of Mark Schimick on mandolin and anything with strings, who has been a mainstay in Larry Keel and Natural Bridge for the last ten years, a sense of coming full circle has enabled the band to raise their performances to new heights. Joining Boss Hawg at the showcase will be a number of special guests! Boss Hawg is currently working on their second CD; you can hear their music on I-Tunes and CDBaby.com.
